Fiber Guide

Fiber Optic Cable Types

Fiber cables look alike from the outside, but their families differ by fiber type, construction and route. This guide explains the families buyers compare, so your inquiry names the right family for each route segment.

Fiber type first: single mode and multimode

Every cable decision starts with fiber type. Single mode fiber carries signals over long distances and suits links between sites and cities. Multimode fiber suits shorter links inside buildings and across campuses. The two types must not be mixed in one link, and the cable must match the fiber type already installed.

If you are unsure which type your link uses, check the existing cable and equipment records before ordering. Ordering the wrong fiber type is the most expensive simple mistake in fiber buying, because the cable cannot be adapted after installation.

Construction families and their routes

Standard cables cover ordinary indoor and outdoor routes. Armored cables add a protective layer for routes facing mechanical risk, such as paths near digging or heavy traffic. Direct burial cables are built to go into the ground. Pre-terminated cables arrive with connectors already fitted, which suits sites where termination work must be short or where skilled splicing labor is scarce.

Matching cable to route segment

Break every route into segments and match a family to each one. An indoor riser, an outdoor wall run, a buried section and an aerial span in the same project may need different families. Describe each segment in your inquiry: its environment, its endpoints, and the joints it needs.

Also confirm termination at each end. A cable family decision is incomplete until you know how each end terminates: spliced in a closure, terminated in a box, or patched at a frame.
